🔴 TRIGGER WARNING - DRUG USE 🔴
I was seething with rage. How could he? He screwed me over and lost my car! As I got in the driver's seat of my grandma's car, I couldn't help but start laughing. I was angry, but I just couldn't believe what was actually happening.
Dustin got in and I flew down the driveway. I wasn't sure where I was going or what I would even do if I did find the car. All I knew was that I had to do something. I couldn't just sit there and wait around. As I drove out of city limits and on to the interstate, I was completely zoned out. Trying to piece together what could have happened. I imagined him loading up TV's in the car to be chased by some old man into the woods where he called me.
I may never know what really happened, and I didn't really care. I just wanted my car. Dustin was pretty quiet the first little bit of being in the car with me. We had never really gotten to know each other, only in passing. Now he was here with me on some grand theft auto mission.
"So... why in the hell did you let him take your car?"
I looked over at him, startled because I didn't think he was going to talk.
"I... Well, he had taken it before and brought it back right when he said he would. I guess I'm just fucking stupid. Gio tried to warn me, but I didn't believe him. Now I just feel like a dumb ass."
"Well, it was a dumb ass thing to do. Not the first time he's done shit like this."
"I didn't know! I mean, I really haven't known him for that long. He was always good to me. He never fucked me over before."
"I hope you learned something from this. You can't trust people like him. Don't even trust me. I'm a piece of shit too."
"Why would you say that?"
"I'm not a good person. None of us are. Maybe I used to be a long time ago. But it's been so long that I can't remember."
I stared out into the stretch of highway in front of me. I felt bad for this guy I barely knew. But here he was being so honest about who he was and who he used to be. I wasn't any better. We were both strung out on meth, but something in me told me he didn't want to be who he was.
"Have you ever thought about turning your life around? Getting clean?"
"Hah, haven't we all? It's too late for me. I mean... I really want it. I want a normal life. I want to raise my family like a normal person, but I have done too much. Been to jail too many times. Society has given up on me. Even if I wanted to change, I'd have no options left. I could get clean right now and stay clean for 5 years, but no one would even give me a chance because of my history. This is all I have left. I can run drugs and steal shit to get my high and live a life without responsibilities. That's all I've got, so why try? It's easier to just keep fucking up."
"I... I'm sorry."
"Don't be. Just get your ass out of this mess before you don't have a choice either. Do you really think people like us do it for fun? That's how it started, but it gets to a point where it's not fun anymore and there's just no turning back."
I drove in silence. I didn't know what else to say. He was speaking from his heart about his life and I barely knew the guy. I felt bad. I pitied him. I had the option to just go home and start all over. I could change my life, but that's gone for him. He could never have that, no matter how hard he tried or wanted it.
"Hey, we made it to the county line... I don't see any sign of your car anywhere. I'm sorry, but it's getting late. I don't think we're going to find it."
I looked over to see the county line sign. My heart sank. I don't know what I was thinking, driving out here like it was just going to be sitting on the corner ready to go. I felt hopeless and defeated. I turned the car around and headed back into town.
"We couldn't find your car, but I have some dope if you want it! You bump?"
"Oh, eh, no... I just smoke it."
"Too bad. I'll give you some when we get back. Stop at the gas station when you get back to town."
I lied. Of course I bumped it, but I wouldn't do it while driving and I don't think I was ready to do it myself. I felt embarrassed by that, so it was just easier to say I didn't do it at all.
I pulled into the gas station and he jumped out of the car and went inside. A minute later he comes out with an orange Fanta and tells me to pull behind the building.
"This shit will fuck you up," he said as he pulled out a little bag of dope and put some in the cap of his soda bottle. He poured some in there and mixed it up.
I stared baffled at what I was seeing.
"Wait, do you want water? I've got water right here."
"Nope, I do this shit all the time! Ain't killed me yet."
I watched as he pulled a syringe from his jeans and pulled up the mixture of orange soda and methamphetamine into the needle. I honestly couldn't believe what I was watching. Without hesitation, he held his arm out and poked the needle into his skin. Seconds later the mixture was gone and coursing through his veins.
I tried to look calm, but I was low key freaking out because I was sure it would kill him. The dope wasn't concerning, it was the fact that he just shot up with soda! I shook my head and drove back to Troy's as quickly as I could, just in case he had a heart attack or something. Not while I'm driving.
We made our way back to Troy's house and thankfully, Dustin was still alive and kicking. I walked inside and slumped against the wall. I put my head to my knees and started to cry. I can't believe what is happening. I would have never had my car stolen had I never started doing drugs. This stuff only happens to people who are really fucked up... and I guess that's me.
"Hey... Em?"
I looked up and saw Danielle. She crouched down next to me and handed me a piece of paper.
"I did some research and I think I know what happened to your car. It looks like it's impounded out in Crow. He was just past the county line. Give them a call and see what you need to do."
"Oh, thank you. I really appreciate that."
I took the paper. It said "Crow County Impound". My heart sank because I knew I'd have to come up with God knows how much money to get my car back. I wiped away my tears and gave them a call.
I told the man on the other end of the line what had happened and he confirmed that he had my car, although he couldn't help me. It was seized by the police, so I had to call them. My heart sank. I guess I had to call them no matter what. I had to get my car back.
I looked up the number but just stared at it for a while. I had to call the cops. Part of me wondered if they could access my phone's camera when I called and could see where I was. What if they knew I was high? What if they came after me? In the back of my mind, I knew it was just paranoia from being high, but I couldn't shake it.
I walked into the bathroom and shut the door. No drugs in sight. Even if they did see me somehow, they wouldn't see anything that I could be arrested for.
I took a deep breath and called the number to the Crow County Sheriffs' office.
"Thank you for calling CCSO how may I direct your call?"
"Hi, um, my car was stolen and I was told to call to see what I needed to do to get it back."
"Okay, may I have your name please?"
"Emily Breshears."
"What car were you driving?"
"It was a silver 2010 Buick Rendevous. It had some band stickers on the back..."
"Oh... I see. Yes ma'am. You will need to come to the office tomorrow to file some paperwork before we can determine if your car can be recovered."
"Tomorrow?"
"Yes. Tomorrow or you will not be eligible to retrieve your car or any of the belongings within."
"Oh... Okay, thank you."
I hung up the phone and stormed out of the bathroom.
"They said I have to go up there tomorrow! I can't do that! I'm high as fuck! I'll be high tomorrow! I don't... I can't! Oh my God, this is such bull shit!...I-"
"Emily," said Troy, cutting me off, "we will get your car. I can take you up there."
"But I don't want to go! What if they know I'm high? What if they think I did it? What if I get arrested?"
"They can't arrest you on the spot. Right now, you're the victim. They have nothing they can hold against you."
"I don't want to go, I'd rather just give up my car."
"If you don't go, they might assume you're an accomplice and have a warrant out for you anyways."
"What!?"
"Em, just go," said Danni.
I looked over at Gio who was sitting on the couch. He nodded his head but didn't look at me. I assumed he was still upset with me. I looked back at Troy who just shrugged. There was really nothing else I could do. I had to go, and I prayed that I came back, with or without my car.
"ding, ding, ding"
"Jesus Christ dude, please put your seatbelt on. It's been going off for 20 minutes! I'm going insane!"
"You'll be fine."
Troy and I were heading up to the sheriff's office. He was doing 70 in a 55 with no seat belt on, so not only was I worried about what would happen, but if we got pulled over, we'd be in trouble for that too. Plus the beeping was driving me crazy.
I pulled my legs up into the seat and hid my head in my jacket. I didn't want to see how fast he was going and I just didn't want to exist at all right now. I was scared to death. I had no idea what to expect. I was hoping to sign a few papers, maybe identify my car and leave.
"We're here."
I looked up to see a large tan building in front of me with several police cars out front. I took a quick look in the mirror. I hadn't slept, but I didn't think I looked high. Tired maybe, but not high. I reluctantly got out of the car and followed Troy inside.
Everything was a blinding white, except for the black metal chairs lined up against the walls. I walked up to the desk and told them why I was there. I looked back at Troy who was looking down at the ground. I wanted some kind of reassurance, but it didn't look like I was getting any.
"Breshears!"
I looked over to see two men standing by a metal door, motioning for me to follow. I looked back at Troy one last time and followed them down the hallway.
"How are you today Miss Breshears?"
"I'm doing okay, just a little anxious."
"Nothing to be anxious about, we just have a few things to go over with you. Step in here if you don't mind."
I walked into a closet-sized room, just as white as everything else. There was only a small table and chairs. I sat down and the two police officers sat across from me.
"So, in your own words, I need you to tell me what happened."
Shit. Troy and I had gone over this several times last night, but I was drawing a blank. I just had to wing it, but I was bad at lying.
"I... I let Ty borrow my car. He said he...n-needed to pick up a friend and take him home from the hospital. I wasn't feeling well, so I told him to take it and bring it back to me. He never came back."
"How long have you known Ty?"
"I... I just met him a few days ago through a mutual friend. I don't know him very well. I was just trying to help him out. He seemed like a nice guy."
"Well, he left behind some incriminating evidence, so we know who he is, but we know there were 2 other people with him too. Now let me tell you what records we currently have on Mr. Ty. Theft of property, driving on a suspended license, aggravated assault, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, fleeing from police, carrying certain prohibited weapons, and possessing an instrument of crime. That's just this year. Did you know about his previous crimes Miss Breshears?"
"No! No, he seemed like a good guy and I... I never would have lent him my car had I known that!"
"Do you know who he had in the car with him?"
"No, I don't know anyone else he knows. I mean... The only other people we both know were with me. I didn't know what he was doing!"
"Can you point him out if we show you pictures of some people? Maybe you might recognize someone else who has previously been associated with him."
They laid out several files in front of me with mugshots of Ty along with other people I didn't recognize. I pointed out Ty, but I really didn't recall anyone else.
"Miss Breshears, are you sure you didn't know what he was doing? Do you know what we found in your car?"
"I swear, I didn't know! I don't have any idea what was in there. I had some of my clothes and CD's, but there wasn't much there when he took it."
"We found TV's, computers, phones, household items, methamphetamine, pills, heroin, and drug paraphernalia."
"Oh my God... No, no that's not mine! I swear! I swear on my kids, that was not mine!"
"I understand. Miss Breshears, I need you to follow me. We are going to sign some paperwork on your statement. We still have an ongoing investigation with your vehicle, but we will be in touch when you can retrieve it. At that time, you will be able to access your belongings and take what is yours, or what you want from within the vehicle. You will have the ability to pay the impound fees to have it back when our investigation is done."
I followed them out of the small room, shaken and scared. I just gave them what they needed to associate Ty to the whole situation. I signed the papers in the office and walked back out of the hallway to the waiting room.
Troy looked up at me in surprise, like he didn't expect me to come back out. I was overwhelmed with a sense of relief just by making it back out. We walked outside and back to the car. I immediately lit a cigarette and let out a huge sigh of relief.
"You're not supposed to smoke on government property."
"Fuck them. They have my car, I can smoke a cigarette if I want to."
"So what happened?"
I gave Troy the rundown of everything that happened as he pulled onto the interstate and headed back to his house. He nodded his head and listened carefully to everything I was saying.
"So they took you to the interrogation room?"
"What? They did?"
"What do you think they did? Yeah. I'm surprised they let you out. So you ratted him out though?"
"No, they said they already knew he did it! They had his record pulled and everything. They said he had two other people with him, but I have no idea who they could have been."
"Hm. Well, they for sure know it's him now. He's been stealing from me for too long anyway. It's about time something comes back to bite him in the ass."
"Do you think I'll get my car back?"
"No. But I think you should start watching your back. He's going to find out. You done burned that bridge once and for all. Just stay with us. He won't try any shit at my house. He knows I know too many people who don't like him."
"Will he come after me?"
"I can't say for sure. We will just have to find out."
To be continued...
